Four Reasons To Free Yourself From The Sugar Trap

As you almost definitely already know, processed sugar is not intended to be consumed in high quantities on a regular basis. And yet, for so many of us we just can’t seem to stay away. If you know you need to cut back on your sugar and are in need of some motivation, here are four major benefits of calling it quits:

  1. Look younger
Studies show that sugar in the blood creates an effect called glycation, which degrades the firmness and elasticity of the skin. The less sugar you eat, the longer you’ll keep your youthful skin.

  2. Less Belly Fat
If you’re trying to get in shape but your stomach doesn’t want to cooperate, it could likely have to do with your sugar intake. Sugar causes fat to actually build up around your vital organs (liver, pancreas, intestines). While this can lead to more serious health problems, it’s also the obstacle in your way to meeting your more superficial fitness goals. (note: having a sugary treat here and there won’t pose a threat to your health. It’s when sugar is abused that your organs can potentially face danger).

  3. Feel energized
Sugar is digested quickly and therefore enters your bloodstream almost as soon as you eat it, giving you a quick jolt of energy known as a sugar high. The problem is that once the sugar is fully metabolized, your energy levels will crash. So, essentially, all the sugar has done is deplete your energy resources. Replacing sugar with fruits and nuts will help you sustain a comfortable amount of energy throughout the day. These foods take longer to digest, so the type of energy they give you is steady and reliable, instead of immediate and fickle.

  4. Lower risk of obesity
A study conducted from 1997 to 2010 in 75 different countries revealed a shocking correlation between sugar consumption and weight gain. When, across a nation, there was a one percent increase in soft-drink consumption, the number of overweight people rose to an additional 4.8 out of 100 people.

In small doses, sugar is one of the most popular pleasures in life, and there’s no reason for that to change. The problem arises however, when sugar becomes a daily habit, which unfortunately it has for many. If you think you might be eating an unhealthy amount of sugar, try cutting it out for just one month and notice the improvements in your health.
